RUAHA NATIONAL PARK
Ruaha National Park is one of the largest national park in Tanzania covering 20,226sqkm and was established as a national park in 1964. It is part of Rungwa-Kizigo-Muhesi eco-system and was named after Ruaha river which flows along its south-eastern margin. Ruaha National Park holds a semi-arid vegetation with miombo woodland, acacia and baobao trees, Ruaha river, Wetlands and the Ruaha gorge, all these bare a home for various exceptional wildlife like for example mammals like greater and lesser kuddu, hartebeest, zebra, eland, hippo, giraffe, leopard, lion, buffalo, sable antelope, impala, bushbuck, gazelle, waterbuck, elephant, black-backed jackal, cheetah, spotted hyena and African wild dog,
birds, reptiles, amphibians like snakes, crocodiles and frogs, plants among others, making it a must visit when in Tanzania. All in all, Ruaha National Park is good for spotting predators.
ACCESS TO THE PARK
Ruaha National Park is about 130 km west of Iringa and 625 km from Dar-es-salaam, its either accessed by road or air transport.
By Air, a flight can be scheduled from Julius Nyerere International Airport to the Msembe airstrip at the park´s headquarters or Jongomeru airstrip near jongomeru Ranger Post.
BIO DIVERSITY IN RUAHA NATIONAL PARK
The Ruaha National Park’s semi-arid vegetation gives life to different wildlife species and makes it easier to view different animals especially predators, with a total of over 45 mammals, 500 birds making it relatively biodiverse. Some of these unique species of Ruaha, include, lion, wild dog, leopard, buffalo, greater and lesser kuddu, rhino, buffalo, hyena, roan, sable antelope. The Ruaha National Park also inhabits unique and various birds like the crested barbet, yellow-collared lovebird, ashy starling, crested barbet, Eleanora’s falcon, long-crested eagle, Namaqua dove, southern ground hornbill, white-bellied go-away bird among others.
Ruaha national park is hot and dry with an average temperature of around 27 Degrees Celsius. It has a dry season (May-October) and a wet season (November-April) though heavy rains with thunderstorms be common, but it is unusual for rainfall to last throughout the day.
ACTIVITIES TO DO ON RUAHA NATIONAL PARK SAFARI TANZANIA
Birding is one of the activities done in this park since it has over 500 bird species, making it a great destination for a birder. The park has good birding spots with various species that are eye-catching and interesting to watch like the Ashy starling, Black-bellied bustard, Collared palm-thrush, Crested barbet, Eleanora’s falcon, Emerald-spotted wood dove, Goliath heron, Long-crested eagle, Namaqua dove, Southern ground hornbill, Tanzanian red-billed hornbill, White-bellied go-away bird, Yellow-collared lovebird, African fish eagle among others. This can be done with experienced rangers available at the parks headquarter. Bird watching at this game park is good all-round the year but the best time is from November to April since migratory birds arrive from Europe and north Africa.
Ruaha national park is good for game driving due to a variety of wild life, during the drives through the savanna grassland and along the water sources, different animals like lions, wild dogs, leopards, greater and lesser kuddu, rhinos, buffalos, hyenas, roans among others are easily spotted. Sometimes birds can also be spotted. The game drives are done at any time, a ranger should lead the drive for directions and so as to cover every detail.
NATURE WALKS in Ruaha game park
Ruaha national park offers the opportunity to explorer the wild on foot, these are offered by the different hikes made within the grasslands, along the river banks as you see different wildlife. During the walking various wildlife like animals for example rhinos, giraffes, zebras, lions, leopards, hyenas, cheetahs, buffalos, butterflies, insects, plants and birds are quietly and closely observed. Apart from wildlife, the walks give you the clear sight and feel of the beautiful sceneries and landform of this park. These walks are led by an armed experienced guide.
There are so many accommodation facilities located in and around Ruaha National park. These facilities offer different types of accommodation including lodges, cottages, bandas and luxury camps. Around the park are good accommodation facilities like lodges, hotels among others.
